The Department gained immense prominence under the able guidance and leadership of renowned sociologists, especially Prof. Victor S. D.Souza, who made a distinguished place in national and international academic circles not only for himself but for the department too. Recognizing its valuable contribution and output to the development of the discipline, the University Grants Commission designated it under Special Assistance Programme and with the consistent efforts of successive Chairpersons and Coordinators of S.A.P., the department was able to successfully complete four phases of the Special Assistance Programme. University Grants Commission also awarded ASIHSS to the department for infrastructural and academic development under which a number of research and other activities were accomplished by the faculty of the department. Recently, on the successful completion of four phases of S.A.P., the University Grants Commission has recognized the department as Centre for Advanced Study, extending grants for pursuing teaching, individual and collaborative research in specific thrust areas along with existing areas of specialization being pursued by the present faculty. It is a matter of pride that at present every faculty member has a personal computer along with a healthy work culture, culminating into a wonderful team culture.
The Department has successfully maintained the tradition of Weekly Seminar, held every Wednesday at 3.30 p.m. in the Department. Speakers from diverse fields are invited, who initiate discussion on current themes, attracting a large audience comprising of teachers, social activists, students and research scholars from different disciplines.
The Department has an extremely committed faculty, known for its work not only in the region, but all over the country. Apart from teaching, the faculty has been publishing extensively in national and international journals. They are also much sought after by colleges, government departments, training institutes and non governmental organizations for extension lectures, awareness programmes and so on. A number of research projects have been successfully completed by the faculty individually as well as in collaborative projects.
Given an impressive profile of its faculty and repute, department has been receiving excellent students for doing Masters as well as doctorate in Sociology. At present there are nine (9) JRFs (Junior Research Fellow under U.G.C.) working for their doctorate under different faculty members, apart from a large number of other scholars enrolled for Ph.D.
The department has a very effective networking with other universities. Prominent sociologists are invited as Visiting Scholars every year, who engage a few classes with the students enrolled in the department in various courses and deliver public lecture/s. Similarly, faculty members from this department are frequently invited by other universities as Visiting Scholars.
